*From Joann's students:

¡K.N.: Yasuko sensei has taught me beyond what most teachers are capable of sharing and I say this with 16 years of ballet training.? Although it is apparent that her background qualifies her as a highly commended Ballroom dance teacher, it is her knowledge that extends beyond the ordinary, which makes her a genius in art of dance. Only a true dancer can appreciate and understand everything she has to offer to create excellence because her technical expertise is far more sophisticated for most people to comprehend. Learning from Yasuko sensei has taught me the most about dance from the three years that Ifve spent with her. My ballet training has drastically improved and I attribute this to her.

¡C.S.(Tokyo, Japan): In February 2011 I took private lessons from Yasuko sensei (Joann). I am a housewife living in Tokyo who loves Hawaii.  I enjoy staying in Hawaii for about a month twice a year.  My problem was that I had to give up social dancing, my favorite hobby, while I was away from home.  During my last stay in Hawaii I took four private lessons from Yasuko sensei.  Her expert instructions were not only enjoyable but literally an eye-opener for me.  During my years at college I was passionate about gstudent competitive danceh. Decades after graduating from college, old teammates and rivals met to practice and enjoy dancing again.  A club called gIntercollegiate Salonh was organized to bring graduates from different colleges together.  The Salon consists of about 150 members in the Tokyo area. About 50 members participate in four hour practice sessions every Saturday for over 10 years. Private lessons are given by Class A professional. He was a leading figure during his college years as a competitive dancer and has had an active career as a professional dancer for 22 years. Although I learned many valuable dancing techniques from my teachers in Japan, such as the importance of positioning myself and keeping proper contact with my partner, the lessons with Yasuko sensei made me realize how poor my balance was. I had never met a teacher who made me aware of the importance of muscle control. I learned that good muscle control leads to good balance, which makes it easier to dance and makes dancing look beautiful. She patiently showed me how to move my muscles.  The movement of the lower body predetermines that of the upper body. The four lessons made me aware of the essence of dancing but they were not enough to remove bad habits that were built up over years. I am determined to remember the lessons taught by Yasuko sensei. I believe that her approach is the shortest way to dance beautifully. Since there were less than two weeks before my departure when I started my lessons, four lessons were the most I could take. It was such a fruitful experience.  I look forward to my future visits to Hawaii and more lessons with Yasuko sensei. I am happy and grateful to have met such a wonderful teacher. I told my dancing colleagues about Yasuko sensei.  We all look forward to her classes in Tokyo.  We will continue to work hard until that time. I will try to remind myself how important it is to remain flexible and control the body.
